3 Year Anniversary – Bourbon, BBQ, & Fried Chicken Tasting at Boxcar Social Harbourfront

Posted on Updated on

business_card_blank-page-001

Toronto Common is celebrating 3 years of fun, tasting events around the city with a Bourbon, BBQ & Fried Chicken tasting at Boxcar Social Harbourfront!

Monday, January 30th, 7pm

With our Boxcar Social Whisky tastings sold out until March, we wanted to do a variation on the theme for our Anniversary event so regardless if you’ve been to an event already, are still hoping for tickets, or have tickets to an event coming up, you can still celebrate with us!

Bourbon is an American whiskey made primarily of corn and while we’ve showcased two bourbons so far in our whiskey events, this event will showcase it’s own depth with an all bourbon tasting.

Primarily produced in southern parts of the United States, we went back and forth between BBQ or Fried Chicken for the food pairing until we realized, why not have both!

Boxcar Social is giving us their night off so we have the venue all to ourselves!

Their Executive Chef, Nico Aldea will be preparing a special BBQ & Fried Chicken menu with southern comfort sides and Boxcar Social’s whiskey director will be showcasing 5 bourbons in a guided tasting.

Plus we’ll be finishing the night with our signature Orange and Black sesame cake for dessert!

* Due to the special menu for this event, ticket sales will be closing earlier than usual so the venue can prepare.

The Food Menu has been confirmed!
  • Buttermilk Fried Chicken
  • BBQ Ribs with Jerk Rub & Apricot BBQ Sauce
  • Maple Garlic Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese Dip, Hot Sauce, & Crudité
  • Pulled Pork Sliders with Carolina Sauce, Chipotle Mayo, Havarti, & Crispy Shallots
  • Potato Salad with Mayo and Crunchy Mustard Dressing & Fresh Herbs
  • Mac n’ Cheese with Cheddar Cheese Sauce & Peas
  • Coleslaw with Apple Cider Vinegar & Mayo Dression & Chopped Cilantro
  • Deep Fried Pickles
  • Classic French Fries
  • White Sliced Bread

Boxcar Social is quickly taking over the city landscape with a location in Summerhill, Leslieville, and now Harbourfront, plus two off shoots the Slip (summer patio) and Clocktower Bar.

The concept behind Boxcar Social was simple: Do what they love, do it with friends, and do it really well. Offering a curated, rotating list of coffees from the best roasters in the world, a careful selection of some of the world’s top wines, craft beers, and whiskies – they strive to create the most unique tasting experience for their customers. 7 Course Mediterranean Surf & Turf Dinner at the Elm Tree Restaurant

Posted on Updated on

Toronto Common is excited to be partnering with the Elm Tree for a special 7 course Mediterranean Surf & Turf dinner with optional 3 wine pairing.
Ever since we had our first Meatless Monday event, we’ve been dying to do a meaty (Monday or any day) event and we love the Elm Tree’s collection of Mediterranean seafoods and meat dishes.
There’s no steak or lobster for this slightly more adventurous tasting.
We thought it would be fun to showcase some less common surfs and turfs that people regularly see on menus, may be hesitant to order as a main, but would love a taste to expand their palate.
The menu will include:
  • Beef Carpaccio with arugula, caper berries, roasted garlic, truffle, pecorino, tarragon vinaigrette
  • Pan Seared Scallop with sun dried tomato gremolata, roasted eggplant puree, horseradish foam
  • Grilled Octopus with chorizo iberico, capers, shallots, chipotle adobo, smoked paprika
  • Pork Belly with slow braised heirloom carrots, juniper – ale sauerkraut, sweet and sour jus
  • Cornish Hen with roasted brussel sprout, pancetta, celeriac puree, crispy shiitake, green peppercorn jus
  • Duck Breast with braised endive, bulgur, figs, pistachio crumble, pickled mustard seed, duck jus
  • Rack of Lamb Medallion with pomme puree, squash, oyster mushrooms, charred scallion
* some sides and garnishes may change based on seasonal availability
We’ll also be offering two ticketing options this time with the choice of dinner or dinner with a 3 wine pairings.

The Elm Tree is a family-run, modern Mediterranean restaurant focused on quality, fresh, ingredients.
Executive Chef, Ben Mishaev, studied at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, and apprenticed and worked at Michelin Star Cafe Boulud in New York, always with the intention of coming back to Toronto to open a restaurant with his family.
3 years in and the Elm Tree is quickly becoming one of Toronto’s hidden gem restaurants for great food, service, and ambience.

Whisky 2.0 – Barrel Aging Whisky/Whiskey at Boxcar Social Riverside

Posted on Updated on

business_card_blank-page-001

With so many Whiskies at Boxcar Social (and so many locations) they’re adding a NEW series of Whisky events with Toronto Common, this time at their Riverside location featuring the influence of barrels on the aging process.

Boxcar Social’s Whisky director has selected a series of whiskies to showcase the differences between non-age statement versus age statement single malts, single barrel versus small batch bourbon, and a cask finished vs a cask strength single malt.

Whiskies come from all over the world, use different grains, and have different traditions. The one binding element of the spirit is barrel-aging. Every variety has it’s own standards and practices, but what makes a whisky shine with golden or amber hues is the type of barrel or cask it’s rested in.

From virgin American Oak for Bourbon, to the Sherry casks used in Single malts, the wood will define much of the colour, aromas, flavours, and finishes of a whisk(e)y.

In this tasting series, Ray will be taking us on an in depth look at how different casks affect the final product. What’s involved in aging. How are different casks used to create unique flavour experiences. What are the rules of barrel aging.

A selection of Crostini, Cheese & Charcuterie will be available as well.

Toronto Common is excited to announce a special invite to That’s Life Gourmet‘s Summer Tasting Series.
That’s Life Gourmet is celebrating summer with a series of tasting events that feature each of their product categories; sake, Spanish wines, and Champagne.
Their third portfolio tasting will be a Summer Social at the NEW Boxcar Social Harbourfront location with a collection of Terra Alta (high land) wines from the Catalan region of Spain.
They will be showcasing 5 wines, only available through private orders, all produced by a cooperative of 19 growers, all with old vines. Old vines have a deeper root structure, are more stable, and are able to access deeper minerals and nutrients than new vines. Yields are also smaller resulting in a more concentrated and complex flavour.
Producing these wines in a cooperative means the producers can share their resources and costs keeping them competitively priced for their category and calibre and making them great for summer socializing and entertaining.
The event will be hosted at the newest Boxcar Social location on the Harbourfront, with beautiful views, a nice breeze off the water, and great patio (weather permitting) plus delicious Spanish inspired dishes for $45 tax and tip included.

That’s Life Summer Tasting Series: Summer Harvest Table Dinner & Champagne Tasting

Toronto Common is excited to announce a special invite to That’s Life Gourmet‘s Summer Tasting Series.

That’s Life Gourmet is celebrating summer with a series of tasting events that feature each of their product categories; sake, Spanish wines, and Champagne and Toronto Common is invited!

This second event will feature 6 Growers Champagnes from Hubert Paulet and Eric Rodez (all only available by private order) and a special Summer Harvest Table Dinner at Woodlot.

Grower Champagnes are sparkling wines made in the Champagne region that are produced by the same estate that grows the grapes. Rather than sourcing grapes from multiple vineyards, grower champagnes are an expression of the grower, the land, and the season.

Both of these producers also put heavy emphases on natural production going as far as using horse and plows instead of machines to work the soil and avoiding any pesticides to help maintain the health of the plants, and the land.

With a focus on artisanal, tastes of the region Champagnes, That’s Life thought Toronto’s Woodlot Restaurant would be a perfect host.

Simple, honest, and handmade foods crafted from the finest raw, local (and sometimes distant) ingredients, Woodlot will be hosting a special Summer Harvest dinner around their chefs table with a selection of dishes using quality ingredients to showcase the season paired with the Grower Champagnes available for Toronto Common guests only at $110 tax and tip included.

Join us for a celebration of summer harvest and Champagne Wednesday, August 17th at 7pm.
